TWENTY-THREE

“Come on, Benny, hurry up," Carrie encouraged as they rushed down the hill on foot, trying to put as much distance between them and the danger as possible. And by “danger,” she was, of course, referring to that crazy bitch. She was the danger, but the fire outbreaks were also no laughing matter.

In retrospect, her plan had flaws, but she had panicked and acted. And now, no matter how many times she called for a taxi, the line was busy. What is going on? she wondered. Maybe that was a sign that she should not waste money on transportation. At the same time, it wasn't like they could walk to the motel.

Maybe there's a bus stop somewhere nearby, she mused. As she had all these thoughts, she couldn't shake the scene in front of the guesthouse. It played on repeat in front of her eyes. She couldn't believe Alanna tried to force her to stay. Despite the reason, despite the danger, she was adamant that Carrie had to stay with her. And she went into hysterics when Carrie opposed her.

No wonder all the workers had to sign NDAs. That woman was completely unhinged. Not that the rest of the family was normal. Although to be perfectly frank, it wasn't Mrs. Gould's fault. She was ill.

Sterling and Alanna were something else entirely. He was a serious menace and so was she, just in a different manner. It was hard to determine who was worse.

At first, Carrie simply believed the famous actress was a bit overprotective, cautious, and most of all scared something could happen to the baby that was her last chance at motherhood. Of course, after today's events, Carrie came to realize how wrong she was.

Alanna Gould was a control freak, plain and simple.

"Mom, where are we going?"

Carrie had no idea where they were going. She hadn’t thought that far ahead. All she knew was that she had to escape that woman, and they had. What now, Carrie? Her son's words reminded her that she should come up with a plan other than stressing about her crazy employers.

Where are we going? The more appropriate question was where could they go considering Alanna and Sterling were the wealthiest movie stars in the city. How would they stay below the radar, since there was no doubt in her mind that the Goulds would overturn heaven and hell to find her.

"We are going to a motel," she replied vaguely.

They would find a suitable motel, and by “suitable,” she meant cheap, preferably someplace in their old neighborhood. They would hide there until Carrie figured out their next move. They couldn't stay there long, and not simply because the Goulds would be looking for her. She only had enough money for a couple of days, and after that, they were screwed.

What am I to do? They were homeless, broke, and she was pregnant on top of everything.

I will figure something out. She forced herself to calm down. She didn't have the luxury of falling apart. She had kids to take care of.
